Q: Is the long-tail motor easy to maintain?

A: For the maintenance of the boat engine, it uses 6/10ths of quart of oil a little over a half a quart. When checking the oil level, DO NOT screw the dipstick in when checking. Check the boat engine’s owner’s manual for recommended break-in procedure. Change the oil after every 50 hours. Make sure you have clean gas. Don’t run gas with ethanol in it. To store it after the season is over, it’s a good idea to change the oil, put fresh oil in and drain the fuel out of the carburetor. There is a drain screw on the bottom of the carburetor’s float bowl.

Q: How easy is the Stump-Jumper boat motor assembly process?

A: The setup is really pretty simple. There is a step by step instruction manual with the frame assembly and everything needed for setup for your new long tail boat motor. You will need to provide some basic hand tools. The keyway is in the engine’s hardware kit with manual and a spark plug wrench. Install the keyway in the key slot on the engine’s crankshaft. Tighten the coupling set screws.

Four fasteners for the face plate and one for the tiller handle support. These fasten the engine to the frame assembly. Put the tiller handle in the desired position and hook up the throttle cable. You will need to drill a 5/16″ hole through the transom of the boat for mounting the transom clamp. Mount the transom clamp on the boat with one 5/16” bolt. The transom clamp will stay with the boat. The frame assembly has a pin that fits into the transom clamps receiver hole that will mount the frame assembly to the transom clamp. The frame assembly can be removed from the transom clamp in seconds.

Q: What does Clutch or Direct Drive mean and what do they do?

A: A clutch on a mud motor means that you can have neutral on a mud motor and the propeller won’t rotate with the engine running. The clutch when taken out of neutral, the propeller turns.

On a direct drive motor, the engine is running so the propeller is turning all the time. Neutral for a direct drive unit simply means that you have the propeller out of the water.

Q: Will the Stump-Jumper long tail motor work with a short or long transom?

A: The Stump-Jumper works with the short transom. When the Stump-Jumper is mounted on the boat and during operation, the water goes over the top of the cavitation plate, putting pressure on the plate and holding the propeller under the surface of the water. The depth of the propeller can be adjusted by bending the corners in or out.

The long transom will not work. The water would be hitting the underside of the cavitation plate, pushing the propeller out of the water. And the angle would be too steep for the engine to run.

Q: How does the Subaru Engine and frame stand up in a saltwater environment?

A: I believe the past customers that have used the Stump-Jumper in salt water environments hose off with fresh water after being used. There is a corrosion-proof product that you can buy from Quicksilver that leaves a clear protective coating.

  • Momarsh  fatboy dp, Carsten layout boat canvasback, Four rivers,  layout boats, Banks boats such as Muskrat Skiff, Long Point Skiff, and Intruder Sneak Boat. There are also a lot of home-built layout plans that these work on as well.
  • Alumacraft, Lowe, MirroCraft, Tracker®. These flat bottom boats range in lengths of 10 foot to 16 foot that have been used. Boat widths range 32 to 48.
  • Grumman Sport boat, Rogue River 15ft 4in square stern canoe, and Waterquest 15ft 4in square stern canoe.

Remember: The lighter you can keep your boat and gear, the better performance you will have with your new long tail boat motor. All of the boats listed are short transom. The propeller seeks its own level, it does this by the cavitation plate above the propeller. The level can be changed by adjusting the cavitation plate. You will want to adjust the cavitation plate for the weight you’ll be running for most of the time. Running the boat engine propeller closest to the surface will give you the best performance.
